Talking Dogs?

What's your opinion of dogs that 'talk' in stories, movies, ect? As in, talk to other dogs and animals, but not to humans. Do you prefer for dogs to speak, or for them to be silent so you have to read their body language and actions? Does it depend on the story/movie?
I'm asking because I've reached a roadblock on a story I'm writing - do I make the dogs verbally communicate, or leave them silent? I'm leaning towards non-talking, however, I figured I'd try to take a poll on it and try to see what others prefer. If you'd like to give your opinion, but think it depends on the story, I've put up the prologue and first chapter of the story on the Writing Display board under 'When it Rains :: It Pours'.

What an interesting question. I've read and and seen plenty of both, and honestly, I think it really depends on the content of the story. I think your story would be fine either way. :)<br /> <br /> <i>The Incredible Journey</i>, if I remember correctly, was completely non-verbal. However, it as an amazing story, and I really enjoyed the realism. I read it in elementary school, so that's a good example that not all kid books have to have talking animals. The famous Disney movie <i>Homeward Bound</i> was essentially the same story, but the animals did talk, and that worked well too. And not all talking animal books have to be for little kids. <i>The Sight</i> by Clement-Davies is my favorite book ever, and especially after taking AP Literature, I can find a lot of intelligent meaning in it.<br /> <br /> That's just my two cents. :)
